Ramadan bazaar food waste increases by 45 pct this year — KDEBWM

SHAH ALAM, March 31 — An estimated 73.67 tonnes of food waste is collected on a daily basis from Ramadan bazaars throughout Selangor, with an increase of 45 per cent this year compared to last year at 50.78 tonnes.

KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd's (KDEBWM) media and public relations department said the waste was collected from areas under the jurisdiction of seven local authorities.

"The rise in food waste is caused by an increase in the number of business plots and traders at Ramadan bazaars, as last year they were more limited due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic," it said in a statement.

KDEBWM said the most noticeable increase was in bazaars under Klang Municipal Council, with 16.5 tonnes of waste collected daily.

"For bazaars in Hulu Selangor, Kuala Selangor, Ampang Jaya, Sabak Bernam and Petaling Jaya, they are managed by their respective councils," it said.
