Luas successfully controls fuel, hydraulic fluid spilled due to accident on highway

SHAH ALAM, Feb 2 — An incident of pollution was avoided due to the prompt action by the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) in identifying fuel and hydraulic fluid spilled from a trailer that was involved in an accident at KM371.9 of the North-South Expressway (southbound).

In a statement, Luas said they had received information from PLUS Malaysia Bhd (PLUS) at 12.40 this morning regarding the accident at Slim River exit, Perak.

“The accident caused diesel and hydraulic spillage from the trailer involved to flow into the highway ditch.

“Based on an alignment review, the contaminants would have entered Selangor waterways, namely Sungai Bernam, through Sungai Trolak in Perak. This could have potentially caused disruption to the water treatment plant at Bernam River Headworks (BRH) which is around 22.7km downstream of the accident location with a flow time period of up to around 15 hours,” the agency said.
