PETALING JAYA, Jan 11 — The donations of RM250 contributed by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to 60 families residing in its areas for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations has brought smiles all around.

Lembah Subang resident Ting Fong Yee, 38, said the money will be used to purchase food and snacks to be served during the festive period.
"I have been visually impaired for the past 17 years due to glaucoma, and earn a living as a massage therapist with an income of between RM900 and RM1,200 a month, to support my elderly mother and myself.
"So this donation is very meaningful, as we can buy more food for ourselves. every year we only celebrate the festival together since I cannot see and my mother is not able to entertain guests," she said, expressing her joy at receiving the donation for the first time.
Originally from Sabah, Ting has resided in Selangor for a decade now, and was speaking to SelangorKini after receiving the donation at Dewan MBPJ SS3/14 in Taman Sentosa, earlier today.

Another recipient, Section 14 resident Lau Meng Hung, 45, uses a wheelchair to move around. He said he will use the money to purchase a new shirt and a pair of shoes.
"I began using a wheelchair six years ago as I was unable to walk due to congenital arthritis, and earn my living by busking.
"I do not have a fixed income, so with this donation, I have extra money to buy new clothes and shoes for this Chinese New Year. So there is some cheer," Lau said, adding he has received donations twice before.

For People's Housing Project Kota Damansara resident Cheng Lai Heng, 80, the donations she has been getting in the past six years is indicative that she is still remembered and appreciated as a citizen.
"I am impoverished, separated from my husband and with no children. I survive on RM350 in aid money from the Social Welfare Department (JKM).
"When someone gives me help, I am happy because someone remembers me," said the senior citizen who remains in good health to take care of herself.
