Death toll from earthquake in Indonesia's Cianjur rises to 103

JAKARTA, Nov 22 — The death toll from a deadly 5.6-magnitude earthquake in Cianjur district, West Java, has increased to 103 – mostly due to falling objects caused by the shaking ground.

At least 390 people were injured and 31 remain missing, according to data compiled by Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) as at 9.550am local time today.

BNPB’s spokesperson Abdul Muhari said rescuers are continuing to search for survivors following Monday’s on-land quake near the mountainous area of Cianjur.

Over 7,100 people, including eight families in Sukabumi and four people in Bogor, were placed in relief centres after 3,075 houses were damaged, with around 59 houses collapsed.

The quake, which triggered a landslide, damaged roads in Cugenang and Cijedil, and the collapse of two bridges, he said in a statement.

Abdul Muhari said over 118 aftershocks between magnitude 1.5 and 4.2 have been recorded since the quake hit.

The Cianjur Regency Authority declared a 30-day emergency response status since Monday to deal with post-disaster recovery and rehabilitation.

BNPB has provided 1.5 billion rupiah (RM438,000) to meet immediate expenses and provided 500 million rupiah (RM145,000) in funding to focus on logistics, he said.
