SHAH ALAM, Oct 3 — KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) has identified more than 50 sensitive areas across the state that are at risk of flooding if heavy rains continue.
Among the locations involved are 14 in Klang, nine each in Hulu Langat and Sepang, Gombak (eight), Petaling (five) and Kuala Selangor (four), said its managing director.
According to Ramli Mohd Tahir, all of the areas involved are classified as hotspots due to their proximity to a river in addition to having low terrain.
“Hence, KDEBWM is taking immediate and consistent action by cleaning the drains and picking up bulk garbage every week so that water can flow and nothing gets blocked,” he said.
Meanwhile, he informed that his people is in discussion with 12 local authorities to create a mini temporary transfer station for solid waste in the event of a flood.
“If it floods, we would already have suitable locations that can be activated for cleaning operations. This is a more systematic preparation compared to last year’s flood,” Ramli added.
In December last year, a total of 186 areas in Selangor were hit by floods following extraordinary rainfall from 100 to 400mm continuously for several days.
Following that, KDEBWM, a state subsidiary that fully manages domestic waste collection, cleaned 78,000 tonnes of bulk wastes in collaboration with PBT and other agencies.
