SHAH ALAM, Sept 15 — The state and Federal governments need to invest in new technology as preparation for food security issues due to climate change.
Bandar Utama state assemblyman Jamaliah Jamaluddin what worries her the most if climate change takes place is food security on whether it will be sufficient or not.
"In Malaysia, we are dependent on foreign countries for supply of food. Climate change is not what most people think it is, which is that temperature will rise a few degrees and turning on the air conditioner will solve the problem.
"The issue is if it (the temperature) goes up even by one or two degrees, will it affect the crops or not? If there is too much rain, there will be floods, if there is no water, the plants will not grow.
"So we need to invest in certain technologies so that crops will not be affected if the temperature changes, or a plan of what to do when that situation comes," she said.
She said this during the Skop talk show titled ‘Preparation for Disaster’ broadcast live on SelangorTV Youtube and Media Selangor Facebook yesterday.
Jamaliah said climate change will also indirectly affect the income of farmers who are dependent on farming for their livelihood.
She said what is more worrying is when food resources become limited, which indirectly makes prices of food to become more expensive and thus puts a burden on the community.
