SHAH ALAM, Sept 12 — The sea level along the coast of Klang and Kuala Selangor is predicted to reach 5.5 metres today due to the high tide phenomenon.
Berita Harian reported the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department Operations assistant director Hafisham Mohd Noor, as saying that they expected the highest sea level to be at Port Klang Station.
"The sea level today in some locations in Klang is 5.4 metres, others are only around three metres. The highest (5.4 metres) is only in Kuala Selangor and Klang because they are close by.
"Everything is still under control because it has not rained so far. If it rains, there is a high possibility of the need to evacuate flood victims because the water cannot flow out to sea," he said.
He said 10 fire stations in Klang and Selangor along with 100 personnel have been mobilised to monitor the phenomenon and to be on standby to evacuate victims in the event of a flood.
"The residents have been informed in advance as well and we recommend that they evacuate if it rains heavily during the high tide," said Hafisham.
Meanwhile, Kuala Selangor Fire Station chief Ismail Zakariya expects the high tide to peak today at 6.54pm with a level of 5.1 metres.
Residents, especially in Klang and Kuala Selangor are reminded to prepare for the high tide phenomenon that occurred from yesterday to Wednesday which may cause floods.
The phenomenon is also expected to occur between September 27 and 29 September, with the sea water level expected to rise up to 5.4 metres.
