SHAH ALAM, Aug 25 — Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) has introduced zakat (tithe) education to school students under the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) through the Selangor Zakat Education Module.
LZS chief executive officer Sabirin Mohd Sarbini said the syllabus is being taught to a total of 553 primary and secondary schools as well as Quran and Fardu Ain (Kafa) classes starting March this year.
He said it was a long-term strategy to nurture the character and culture of the community that prioritises zakat payment as an important act of worship in addition to raising awareness about zakat among the younger generation.
"This Selangor Zakat Education Module is used for the learning sessions of 268,412 primary school students (251,456) and secondary school students (16,956) under the supervision of Jais,” he said, adding that the module was developed using the allocation under the Fisabilillah (in the cause of Allah) category amounting to RM248,000.
Sabirin was speaking at the media conference following the module launching ceremony by Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, here today.
Also present were Selangor Mufti Datuk Anhar Opir and Jais director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad.
On the zakat syllabus, he said it contained five modules of which one module is specifically for primary school students and the rest are for form one to form four students which also covers examinations.
"The five modules cover basic aspects of zakat such as zakat as an act of worship, the meaning, pillars and types of zakat, zakat management in Selangor (collection and distribution), calculations, distribution principles, amil (collector) management, legislation and fatwas involving zakat.
"It has references, studies and arguments to support each topic. LZS is also collaborating with Jais Islamic Education Division to monitor the implementation of the module from time to time," Sabirin added.
