SHAH ALAM, July 1 — Selangor remains the biggest contributor to the national economy in Malaysia, with a gross development product (GDP) value of RM343.5 billion in 2021.
This is in contrast with its GDP value in 2020, which stood at RM327.1 billion.
The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), in its report on the economic performance of the states, indicated that Selangor's economic growth last year was approximately 5 per cent, second only to Penang's 6.8 per cent.
In terms of its performance in 2021 versus its pre-pandemic performance in 2019, Selangor marked only a slight contraction at -0.4 per cent.
For the sectors, the manufacturing sector in the state saw sufficient growth by 13.1 per cent, compared to a contraction of -0.7 per cent in 2020. This was helped by plastics, electric products, electronics, chemicals, optical, rubber and petroleum products.
It is followed by the agricultural sector, which expanded to 4.9 per cent last year, contrasting with the 0.3 per cent growth in 2020. It was led by the livestock, fisheries and crops subsectors.
The services sector saw modest growth at 2.2 per cent, a nonetheless respectable increase compared to the contraction of -6.6 per cent in 2020. Its was spurred mainly by the information and communication, food and beverages, retail and wholesale, accommodations and utilities, and the transportation and storage subsectors.
Meanwhile, the construction sector declined by 6.6 per cent in 2021, compared to the -9.7 per cent growth the year before. This was caused by a reduction in the civil engineering subsector. Similarly the mining and quarrying sector declined by 3 per cent in 2021.
