TANJUNG KARANG, June 12 — The RM100 Skim Mesra Usia Emas (SMUE) shopping vouchers can now be redeemed at any time of the year and are no longer restricted to the recipient's birthday month.
V Ganabatirau, the state executive councillor for socio-economic development, said that since March, voucher holders have been able to use their vouchers at their local community service centers within the same year.
"The distribution system was changed because many recipients were unable to use collect vouchers, resulting in an accumulation of vouchers.
"We've noticed that the percentage of recipients has increased since the implementation of the new system," he told SelangorKini.
The Selangor government had in its 2022 budget announced that RM27.5 million would be disbursed in the form of RM100 to each recipient for the SMUE initiative.
Heirs to the recipients would also receive RM500 as a death benefit payment. Some 402,000 individuals stand to benefit.
Since its launch in 2019, a total of 372,453 recipients have received the SMUE Jom Shopping vouchers.
The programme has received an encouraging response from senior citizens and people with disabilities.
