SHAH ALAM, March 14 — The decree by the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj for a more serious focus on frequent floods in the state has been well-received by the state assemblymen in attendance.
Ijok state representative Dr Idris Ahmad said His Royal Highness’ decree is most suitable, in light of the recent floods and landslides in the state.

“I did propose the state government have long-term planning to avoid floods from recurring, and the responsible parties must pay attention to ensure this is the case.
“The flooding issue causes many difficulties for the people and damage to property. We must respect the environment and not pursue development to the point it causes difficulties to the people,” he told SelangorKini.
Banting assemblyman Lau Weng San said he would discuss the decree in the state assembly tomorrow and raise several suggestions for the state government’s planning to be done systematically and quickly.
“His Royal Highness’ decree is concise and accurate, and as state administrators, we must take a serious view of the climate and weather change happening now.

“We must endeavour to ensure no more water pollution and serious natural disasters can occur. The meeting today is timely, as it can ensure planning for this year could be carried out,” he said.
Earlier, Sultan Sharafuddin officiated the First Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 14th Selangor State Legislative Assembly at the Annex Building here, accompanied by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
In the royal address, His Royal Highness decreed for the Federal and state governments to put aside their political differences and work together to resolve the issue of floods in the Klang Valley.
Sultan Sharafuddin added that doing so would ensure the people would not endure suffering and trauma every time the rainy season occurs.
