SHAH ALAM, Feb 6 — The recent suggestion by the Federal administration to construct a Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) tunnel system in Selangor will be assessed by the state government, says Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Menteri Besar said the state executive councillor for infrastructure, Izham Hashim, is currently compiling the information needed to ease the process.

“We are looking into various means. Aside from deep (underground) reservoirs, such as the technology used in Japan, and bank-side reservoirs, the (SMART) tunnel is one of them (the means).

“These are some preventive measures, but the challenge is how to implement and execute it quickly and effectively,” said Amirudin when met at Wisma Perbadanan Kemajuan Pertanian Selangor (PKPS), here yesterday.

He said the state administration welcomes any ideas on the tunnel and how it would retain excess water.

“What happened in the floods (in last December), the drainages were not able to retain the excess rainwater from the continuous downpour, followed by the high tide phenomenon,” he added.

On Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had said that a SMART tunnel system might be constructed in Shah Alam as a long-term solution to mitigate floods in the area.
