HULU LANGAT, Oct 8 — The state government plans to list honey cempedak (cempedak madu) and ‘nangcem’ (a hybrid of jackfruit and cempedak) as high-value crops.

State executive councillor for agriculture Ir Izham Hashim said both types of fruit may have more potential as high-value crops than durian.

“We want to diversify high-value crops and have asked honey cempedak farmers to share their techniques, cultivation methods and most importantly, seeds.

“Honey cempedak, especially the patriot type, has its own unique aroma while nangcem is special as its fruits are bigger sized like jackfruit and yet taste like cempedak,” he said.

Izham said this after visiting the Hulu Langat Cempedak World Farm accompanied by Hulu Langat District officer Dr Ani Ahmad.

He added that they have identified the area for the planting of the two crops and will make an announcement later.

“We will also organise planting courses for individuals who are interested,” he said.

On September 7 last year, Selangor identified 12 types of high-value crops as a new approach for the agricultural sector to help in the state’s economic development.
