Our rivers are not dumping grounds, says MPKj president

HULU LANGAT, Oct 4 — The Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) is collaborating with the Friends of Rivers (FoR) volunteers to ensure that Sungai Semenyih, near Pekan Semenyih, is frequently monitored to avoid any incidents of water pollution.

Its president, Najmuddin Jemain, said MPKj is disappointed with the community’s attitude that seems to regard rivers as a dumping place for waste.

“Based on our surveillance, we noticed that garbage bags filled with trash are often properly tied up and thrown into rivers.  This means the community’s awareness on environmental cleanliness is still lacking, they consider the river a rubbish bin.

“Therefor, MPKj together with FoR will continue to carry out cleaning and monitoring activities as well as to spread awareness to the local people on how to keep the river free from pollution,” he said when met during the Semenyih Prihatin Sungai (Semenyih Cares for Rivers) programme in Pekan Semenyih, here, yesterday.

Najmuddin added that the community’s habit of throwing garbage into the river has caused disruptions to the state’s water treatment plants, leading to water cuts.

“I hope the people will become more environmentally aware and will not finger point any party. Instead they need to work together to maintain the cleanliness of our surroundings, including at rivers,” he said.
