SHAH ALAM, Aug 31 — The Selangor government has offered to supply 20,000 Covid-19 vaccine doses to Penang for free.
In a joint statement today, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the Selangor administration had on August 19 announced that it would lend 500,000 of its doses of vaccines to other states to speed up the country’s vaccination rate and break the chain of infection.
“This is a show of solidarity between Selangor and Penang in the fight against Covid-19.
“In the spirit of National Day, the Selangor government is pleased to donate 20,000 vaccine doses to the Penang administration for free.
“Both state governments would like to thank the initiative from all parties to ensure that this effort is a success and would further strengthen ties between the two states and would speed up the herd immunity process in Malaysia,” the statement read.
The statement stated as of yesterday, the country is still seeing a high number of daily Covid-19 cases, with Selangor recording 3,567 infections and 1,780 in Penang.
According to the data by the Special Committee on Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV), a total of 1.14 million individuals or 64.4 per cent of Penang’s population, have received their Covid-19 jab, while 55.7 per cent of adults in the state are fully vaccinated.
“As for the Klang Valley — Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Selangor — administration of the first dose have reached 81.4 per cent with 91.1 per cent of the adult population completed two doses,” the statement read.
