SEPANG, April 7 — The Selangor government is targeting 300,000 small traders to register and use e-wallet by the end of this year.

State executive councillor for entrepreneur development Rodziah Ismail said the concept was introduced in 2019 but some constraints had delayed its implementation.

“In the past two years, we found out that small traders are the slowest to get involved. When we did a study, we found out that they were not ready and did not understand.

"So we pass this to the local councils along with a special officer to bring this matter to the ground and those who get a license need to go through an e-wallet course so that they understand," she said after handing over food aid to taxi and school bus drivers during a Sepang Municipal Council programme at Dataran BBST Walk here today.

She said, among the difficulties faced by small traders in using the e-wallet is getting fast cash to be used as capital for the next day.

"Currently, we are using the existing e-wallet which is beyond the control of the Selangor government and it is expected that the state government will come out with its own e-wallet that is more traders-friendly," she said.

Asked whether the Selangor government would take action by not allowing traders to renew their licenses if they failed to register for e-wallets, Rodziah said they have no intention to do so.

"We are more into advocacy first, that is more important… we guide first because without guidance it will be slow," she said.
