SHAH ALAM, Dec 2 — The Selangor government has outlined several short-term initiatives and processes under its ‘Skim Jaminan Air Mentah’ or Raw Water Security Scheme (SJAM) to tackle the state’s water woes.
In a Facebook posting today, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state administration has come up with four measures under SJAM to ensure the people of Selangor would receive continuous water supply.
“The measures were formulated to ensure the Selangor people would be able to benefit from continuous water supply in the event of an emergency, such as a pollution incident,” said Amirudin.
The four steps outlined include:
1. Early treatment of water treatment ponds
- A biological approach using nanotechnology (aquaritin) as a natural remedy
2. Monitoring and surveillance
- 24-hours surveillance by Skuad Pantas
- Use of high-tech drones to monitor river basin areas, analyse water samples, and collect evidence for Court prosecution.
- Place early odour pollution detection system using an organic carbon analyser device, or the Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analyser
3. Construction of direct pumping infrastructure from Sungai Selangor storage pond (end of 2022)
- To secure water supply during pollution incident (except if during drought season and pollution lasting more than 5 days)
4. Enforcement of the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) (Amendment) Enactment 2020
- Minimum fine of RM200,000 and up to RM1 million
- Mandatory jail sentence
- Power of seizures without a warrant
- Compensation claims
- Rewards to informants
