SHAH ALAM, Nov 10 — More than 405 hectares (1,000 acres) of land belonging to the state government and its subsidiary companies will be developed next year for agriculture purposes, says the Selangor Menteri Besar.

Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the move is in line with Selangor’s future aim to become the national centre of food production and reduce dependency on food imports.

“We have identified locations that have the potential to be developed into food production sites… efforts on this will be done in stages,” he said.

Amirudin said this in his answer to a question by Sijangkang assemblyman Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi when asked on measures taken on abandoned lands in the state during Selangor Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

On July 13, Amirudin announced a RM50 million allocation for the state’s Food Security Programme which outlined five key measures.

The measures in the programme include to expand agricultural areas, increase production activities, empower the Selangor Agriculture Development Corporation (PKPS), enhance agropreneur incentives and boost modern farming methods.
