SHAH ALAM, July 28 — The State Health, Welfare, Women Empowerment and Family Committee chairman says abusive husbands should go through rehabilitation therapy to avoid repeated incidents of domestic violence.

Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud at present there is no jurisdiction that makes it mandatory for the abusers to undergo therapy.

“In many of the cases, the ones that seek counselling services are the victims (wives) as they may experience stress or depression. However, husbands do not do anything to better themselves from being abusive.

“If we do not take the steps to improve the situation, then the wives will continue being a victim of abuse.

“Apart from lodging police report, I hope there would be an act that could compel the husbands to go through therapy. There had been too many repeated abuse cases after the husband has persuaded and begged the wife,” said Dr Siti Mariah to SelangorKini today.

On July 13, the state executive councillor said in collaboration with the Women’s Aid Association, the emergency hotline for victims of abuse have received 361 calls in March and 898 in April, in comparison to the 266 calls received in January and 250 in February.

During the movement control order enforced on March 18, Selangor had recorded 90 domestic violence cases.
