PUCHONG, July 23 — Local authorities can take action against premises that do not comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs), which includes making the use of protective face masks mandatory.

State executive councillor Ng Sze Han said this is allowed under the Local Government Act 1976.

“If we refer to the Act, there is a clause that allowed local authorities has the jurisdiction to enforce any policies or guidelines in order to contain a pandemic.

“Action can be taken against the premises that do not adhere to the rules,” said Ng during a press conference after visiting a flood mitigation project in Puchong Jaya today.

The Federal government had today announced the use of face masks in crowded public spaces and on public transportation will be made compulsory beginning August 1.

Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Yaakob said those who flout this directive can be slapped with a RM1,000 compound notice under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.
