Less reports on fake Covid-19 news, says Selangor police head

SHAH ALAM, Feb 20 — Firm action against those spreading fake news on the Covid-19 outbreak has shown to be effective as the Selangor police contingent headquarters (IPK) has received fewer reports on the matter, Harian Metro reported yesterday.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Noor Azam Jamaludin said this was due to the increased awareness among the public on the consequences of creating and spreading fake news.

“From time to time, police will take stern action against those spreading fake news, especially on matters related to Covid-19.

“There have been cases that were already taken to court,” said Noor Azam at a press conference at the Sepang district police chief's handover ceremony yesterday.

On February 7, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador was reported to have told the public against risking their future by spreading fake news on the country’s Covid-19 infection situation.

He said sharing inaccurate information about the infection was a foolish act that could cause public disorder.
