KAJANG, Jan 21 — The proposed subsidy on the purchase of Child Restraint System (CRS) will be reviewed by the Selangor administration in order to alleviate the burden towards the bottom 40 (B40) group, says Hee Loy Sian.
The State Environment, Green Technology, Science and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman said the matter will be discussed in the State Executive Councillor meeting to formulate a mechanism for state assemblymen to use their own budget allocations for the subsidy.
Hee said the public should abide by the enforcement on the use of the CRS for the safety of the children.
“However, not everyone can afford to provide the safety seat as it is pricy, especially for families that have many children,” he said at the Chinese New Year Special Road Safety Advocacy Programme and Integrated Ops at Sungai Balak toll plaza, here yesterday.
The Kajang assemblyman urged the state government to boost education and awareness campaigns on selecting the correct child safety seats that comply with the stipulated standards.
Malaysia has adopted the United Nations R44 or R129 Standards for CRS.
The guidelines specify four different types of seats – from birth up to 13kg (up to a height of 83cm, approx 0 to 18 months), 9-18kg (71cm and above, approx 15 months to four years), 15–25kg (100cm and above, approx four to seven years) and 22-36kg (up to 135cm, approx six to 12 years).
On January 1, 2020, the Federal government had made the use of CRS in private cars compulsory, with a grace period of six months.
