PUTRAJAYA, Oct 31 — The Health Ministry (MOH) has prohibited the sale of the Beauty Love Skin Essentials Rejuvenating Facial Toner after finding it contained scheduled poisons.
It said the product contained tretinoin and hydroquinone, prompting the MOH's director of Pharmaceutical Services to cancel its cosmetic notification.
Products containing these substances are classified as medicines and must be registered with the Drug Control Authority before they can be marketed.
"Medicines containing tretinoin and hydroquinone should only be used under the advice and supervision of healthcare professionals.
"Unsupervised use may cause adverse effects, including unwanted skin discolouration and increased skin sensitivity," the MOH said in a statement today.
The sale and distribution of the product violated the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.
Individuals found guilty of offences under the regulations may be fined up to RM25,000, jailed for up to three years, or both, for a first offence. For subsequent offences, they may face a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
Companies found guilty may be fined up to RM50,000 for a first offence and up to RM100,000 for subsequent offences.
Consumers currently using the product are advised to stop immediately and seek advice from healthcare professionals if they experience any discomfort or adverse effects.
The public can check the notification status of cosmetic products through the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency website.
