A timeline of Flavio Bolsonaro's wild journey to the US

SAO PAULO, Oct 29 — Flavio Bolsonaro's sudden departure from Brazil — less than three days after his election defeat — began on Sunday with his refusal to concede in the runoff and culminated in his arrival in Miami via Argentina and Ecuador aboard a private jet yesterday.

The right-wing lawmaker left after receiving a Supreme Court order to surrender his passports in connection with a money-laundering investigation, in which he denies wrongdoing.

Below is a timeline of the events. All times are Brasilia time (GMT-3), which is 11 hours behind Malaysia.

Sunday — Election defeat and challenge

  • Bolsonaro loses Brazil's presidential runoff election to leftist incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, despite entering the race as the favourite after winning the first-round vote.

  • Bolsonaro refuses to concede defeat and says he will seek to annul the election, arguing that a Supreme Court decision extending voting hours by two hours affected the outcome.

  • World leaders quickly recognise Lula's victory, but US President Donald Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei initially remain silent.

Monday — Passport order

  • Trump alleges, without presenting evidence, that the Brazilian election "looked like another rigged election", but Bolsonaro's Liberal Party acknowledges the runoff result.

  • Bolsonaro posts a video on social media saying federal police have requested that he surrender his passports following an order from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

  • The senator says he will comply with the order and rejects speculation that he plans to flee Brazil after the election.

  • 12 pm: Bolsonaro misses the deadline to surrender his passports. Although his whereabouts remain unknown, federal police sources tell Reuters the documents have been cancelled.
