KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered a thorough, transparent and uncompromising investigation into the death of Noorizwan Zulkefly in police custody.
In a Facebook post today, Anwar said he contacted Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail to get more information on the case and ensure updates on the investigation are conveyed to the victim’s family.
He said he understands the family’s grief and anxiety as they await answers on Noorizwan’s death.
“I acknowledge the presence of the late Noorizwan’s family to submit an appeal letter to me today. I am deeply saddened by his passing and understand the family’s grief and anxiety as they await answers,” he said.
Anwar, who was scheduled to attend several programmes in Melaka today, said he had delegated his officers to receive the appeal letter and listen to the concerns raised by the family.
Media reports previously said police were still awaiting the full report from the Chemistry Department and the pathology findings to determine the cause of the man’s death on October 1.
Noorizwan was detained by Cheras police under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, as well as Sections 457 and 379 of the Penal Code. He was referred to Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Hospital on September 30 for treatment and was pronounced dead at 1.52am the next day.
