KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 — The value of drugs and poisons seized by the Royal Malaysia Police increased by 43.63 per cent to RM2.85 billion from January to September this year, compared with RM1.98 billion in the same period last year.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the increase of RM865.45 million reflects ongoing enforcement efforts to combat drug trafficking and the abuse of controlled substances.
Approximately 167,601 cases were recorded, with 186,257 arrests made nationwide during the period.
“Based on enforcement statistics for January to September this year, Selangor recorded the highest number of cases at 23,195, with 26,368 arrests, followed by Kedah with 18,843 cases and 19,601 arrests, and Kelantan with 18,008 cases and 19,712 arrests,” he said in a statement today.
Hussein added that the NCID also seized 36,612.72kg of drugs and 30,580.19 litres of drugs in liquid form, in addition to 45,382.70kg and 106,092.56 litres of substances covered under the Poisons Act 1952.
The department will strengthen its enforcement strategies through a more proactive approach and cooperation with local and international enforcement agencies, focusing on disrupting drug supply networks operated by organised syndicates.
“The NCID urges the public to play their role as the eyes and ears of the police by providing information that could assist enforcement action,” he said.
