CANBERRA, Oct 19 — Australia's media regulator has published initial industry guidance on new rules banning celebrities, professional athletes, and social media influencers from appearing in gambling advertisements from January 1, 2027.
Xinhua reported that the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) said on Monday that the ban will apply across all platforms, including television, radio, news websites, online games, and social media.
Under the new rules, gambling advertisements must not feature "notable people", including current or former professional athletes, celebrities, social media influencers, and other prominent individuals.
Licensed online wagering providers will also be prohibited from entering into sponsorship or promotional arrangements involving such individuals from the same date.
The ACMA added that the guidance is intended to help the industry understand and prepare for the new requirements, including relevant exemptions.
