MB urges greater industry role in TVET curriculum

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 — The Selangor government is calling for greater industry involvement in the development of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) curricula to ensure graduates meet actual labour market needs.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said strategic cooperation between industries and training institutions must be strengthened, particularly in providing practical training, access to modern equipment and direct workplace exposure.

“Cooperation between industries and training institutions must be strengthened to ensure the programmes offered meet actual industry needs,” he said at the closing ceremony of the Selangor Techsphere Summit (STS) 2026, held in conjunction with the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS) 2026 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.

Amirudin said the Selangor Technical Development Centre (STDC) plays an important role in bridging the gap between talent training institutions and industry.

“Our young people must be equipped not only with academic qualifications, but also practical skills, adaptability and the ability to work with emerging technologies.

“Therefore, TVET plays an important role in supporting Selangor’s industrial development aspirations.”

He said human capital development is a key focus for the state government, as Selangor does not rely on natural resources such as petroleum, gas or rare earth elements (REE).

“If Selangor wants to attract higher-value investments, whether domestic or foreign, we must have a skilled workforce ready to support these investments.

“Our responsibility is to ensure technological transformation translates into real economic value through stronger businesses, more productive industries, better employment opportunities and a workforce equipped with the appropriate skills,” he said.

Amirudin added that the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2), which runs from this year until 2030, also places particular emphasis on skills development, the adoption of emerging technologies and a culture of lifelong learning.

This is in line with the state’s ambition to establish Selangor as a model state in the ASEAN region through inclusive and competitive economic growth.

TVET development is one of the key priorities under RS-2’s Mission 4: Productive and Inclusive Human Capital, which aims to strengthen the capabilities of the local workforce.

Key initiatives include the establishment of the Selangor Employment Skills Council in 2027 to align skills training with industry demands and address skills mismatches.

In addition to strengthening STDC’s role, the state government also plans to establish a TVET Corporation to prevent duplication of skills training programmes in Selangor.
