KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 — Selangor’s strong economy and gross domestic product (GDP) growth were key factors in battery manufacturer Linergy Power Sdn Bhd’s decision to establish its Malaysian base in the state, said general manager Shelwin Xu.

He said the firm is exploring locations for its third phase of expansion, which could be five times larger than its existing Phases 1 and 2 facilities that currently occupy a 36.4ha site in Serendah.

“We chose Selangor because it is Malaysia’s largest economic hub alongside Kuala Lumpur. It has the highest GDP, and many investors and businesses come here to grow.

“(For Phase 3), we would prefer to remain in Selangor. We’ll try our best to locate (a site) in Selangor, but it’s not decided yet,” he told Media Selangor on the sidelines of the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS) at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Thursday.

Linergy Power’s Phase 1 facility started mass production earlier this year, while Phase 2 is under construction and expected to be up and running in early 2027.

Xu said the company has invested nearly US$500 million (about RM2 billion) in its Phase 1 facility, while Phase 2 could also involve US$500 million. The initial investment for Phase 3 is estimated at US$1.5 billion.

“The company is also targeting an annual revenue of about US$5 billion within the next three to five years,” he added.

Beyond investment, he said Linergy Power is looking to expand its workforce from around 2,000 employees to 4,000 by mid-2027, while Phase 3 could require a workforce of around 8,000.

He noted that the company is committed to developing Malaysian talent and strengthening its local supply chain.

“We try to attract fresh graduates and young talent to join us as we want to build a strong local workforce, including in management,” he explained.

Linergy Power produces lithium-ion battery solutions for applications including drones, residential energy storage systems, power tools and artificial intelligence data centres (AIDCs).

Xu said its specialised battery products for AIDCs can support power management needs, including load smoothing, positioning the company to contribute to Malaysia’s growth in the digital infrastructure sector.

Meanwhile, Xu commended SIBS as a platform linking companies with potential employees, adding that greater publicity before the event and stronger engagement by education institutions could encourage more graduates to explore job opportunities.

“The platform can serve as a bridge for companies and talent,” he said.

Linergy Power is participating in the Selangor Investment and Industrial Park Expo (SPARK), which is a main component of SIBS, held from October 14 to 17.
