MOSCOW, Oct 15 — Khan could soon overtake Smith as the most common surname among newborns in England and Wales, according to a report by Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
Citing The Telegraph, the news agency reported that 3,772 babies with the surname Khan were born in England and Wales in 2025, compared with 4,102 babies bearing the surname Smith, which remained the most common.
Khan has held second place since 2024, steadily narrowing the gap with the traditionally common British surname.
In 2020, there were 1,877 more babies born with the surname Smith than Khan, but the gap had narrowed to just 330 in 2025, the report said.
Ahmed, Ali and Jones were also among the five most common surnames among newborns in 2025.
Separately, according to Office for National Statistics data published in July, Muhammed was the most popular boys' first name in England and Wales, retaining the top spot for the third consecutive year.
