SHAH ALAM, Oct 10 — The increase in the minimum wage from RM1,700 to RM2,000 per month is seen as a measure that will help workers, particularly low-income earners, cope with the cost of living.
State executive councillor for human resources and poverty eradication Papparaidu Veraman said the hike, announced in the 2027 Budget, would provide relief to workers in the lower-income bracket.
“I view the 2027 Budget as beneficial and crucial for the lower-income community. This represents a significant and positive boost for the people.
“In my opinion, the 2027 Budget prioritises the people, and the minimum wage increase will provide greater financial comfort to workers,” he told reporters.
He said this after launching the presentation ceremony for tuition fee assistance programme, targeting B40 Indian community students at public and private higher education institutions (IPTA and IPTS) at the Silver Jubilee Hall, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Building here, today.
At the event, 586 Indian community students from across Selangor were selected to receive assistance, with a total allocation of RM1.5 million.
Each degree-level student received RM3,000 in tuition fee assistance, while diploma students received RM2,000 each.
Yesterday, the government announced an increase in the minimum wage from RM1,700 to RM2,000 per month, effective June 2027.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the Budget 2027, said that micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with sales revenue below RM50 million are exempt from this implementation to allow them time to adjust their business models.
