SHAH ALAM, Oct 8 — The Sungai Tengi flood mitigation project under the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2) is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2028, with works including upgrades to riverbanks, water gates, pumps and related flood control structures.
Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the project had been approved by the Selangor government and would be implemented by the Selangor Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS).
“The project will take into account the findings of the ongoing Sungai Tengi river basin flood mitigation master plan study and will include design and survey works, land acquisition, upgrades to river embankments, water gates and pumps, as well as related flood control structures,” he said in a written parliamentary reply yesterday.
He was responding to Tanjong Karang MP Datuk Zulkafperi Hanapi, who had asked about the latest status of the master plan and when the comprehensive physical flood mitigation project was expected to begin.
Fadillah said the master plan study began in May 2026 and was scheduled for completion in August 2027.
“Its findings will identify a comprehensive solution, including the scope and priorities for physical flood mitigation projects,” he said.
He added that pending the project's implementation, PETRA, through JPS, was carrying out short-term mitigation measures.
These include river desilting, riverbank stabilisation and upgrades to drainage channels and related structures to improve the effectiveness of existing drainage systems.
“A total of RM10 million has been allocated for flood mitigation works in Selangor in 2026, with funds distributed according to the priority of flood-risk areas identified at the state level.
“Of this amount, Tanjong Karang received RM600,000 for approved works, which are expected to be fully completed by December 2026,” he said.
Fadillah said his ministry would continue coordinating and monitoring flood-risk reduction efforts with JPS and the Selangor government, including temporary mitigation measures, until the physical flood mitigation project begins.
