Monsoon transition phase to start Friday — MetMalaysia

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 6 — The monsoon transition phase is expected to start Friday and last until late this month, marking the end of the southwest monsoon which started on May 14, said Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip.

In a statement today, he said that during this phase, the country will experience weak winds from various directions, conducive to the formation of thunderstorm clouds.

“This situation typically brings heavy rain and lightning accompanied by strong winds over a short period, particularly during the afternoon and early evening in most areas in the west and interior of the peninsula, as well as western Sabah and Sarawak.

“These weather phenomena have the potential to cause flash floods, water surges, fallen trees, and damage to unstable structures,” he said.

He added that with the end of the southwest monsoon, transboundary haze from neighbouring countries is expected to gradually diminish following changes in wind patterns.

He advised the public to be more cautious during this period and stay updated with MetMalaysia’s forecasts and warnings on its website, myCuaca mobile app, and social media platforms.

Hisham said people may also call the department through its hotline at 1300-22-1638.
