KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 — A bill was tabled for first reading in the Dewan Rakyat today to enhance enforcement and investigation aspects in Malaysia's sports development.
Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said, when tabling the Sports Development (Amendment) Bill 2026, that it would be tabled for second reading during the current sitting.
It seeks to amend the Sports Development Act 1997 to provide for the management and disposal of assets and liabilities of a sports body whose registration has been revoked, to protect creditors’ interests and stakeholders, among other things.
The proposed amendment also empowers the minister to make regulations to ensure compliance with international obligations relating to anti-doping and any matter relating to safe sport.
The proposed new Section 19c seeks to provide that a sports body shall not change its name, place of business, registered address, or correspondence address, or amend its constitution or rules, without the commissioner's prior approval. This clause also makes non-compliance with this proposed section an offence.
The amendments would empower the minister to declare a sports body unlawful if it is used for purposes prejudicial to or incompatible with Malaysia's security interests, public order, or morality.
