KUALA LANGAT, Oct 5 — School safety issues need to be addressed by all parties to ensure the level and quality of student safety continue to be improved.
Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the issue needed to be viewed holistically and discussed at various levels.
This included parents' role in monitoring their children’s social media use, as well as ensuring students facing problems receive assistance from the school.
“We need to look at how safety procedures are followed at school and at home, followed by the appropriate disciplinary measures.
“What needs to be done immediately now is to determine how efforts can be made to ensure that the level and quality of safety in schools are improved,” he said after the Selangor Nutrition Programme (NutriSEL) at SMK Telok Panglima Garang today.
Amirudin was commenting on calls on social media to review punishments for juvenile offenders following a recent criminal case involving students.
He added that student safety is not limited to the school environment, with parents also playing an important role, particularly in monitoring their children’s use of social media.
“How can parents monitor their children’s use of social media and so on, given that a significant number of previous cases have been linked to negative influences arising from uncontrolled social media use or exposure to activities such as gaming and so on?
“The government has also previously attempted to impose restrictions based on certain age groups,” Amirudin said.
In response, the Menteri Besar urged all parties to seek solutions maturely and not turn incidents involving students into political issues.
“So we need to be careful because this concerns the future of our children. Everyone must take the opportunity to think maturely and not easily turn it into a cheap political issue,” he said.
Simultaneously, Amirudin reminded students facing problems to come forward and seek help rather than keeping them to themselves.
