SHAH ALAM, Oct 5 — Shah Alam is set to have its own tourism mobile app, with development now at 80 per cent completion and expected to launch early next year.
The Star reported that Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Community Development Department director Shahrin Ahmad said the app would be developed from the local authority’s existing tourism portal.
It is expected to list attractions and popular spots in Shah Alam.
His department is working on the app in collaboration with MBSA’s Digital Department.“When we travel, sometimes we fall ill and need to find help, or a tourist may lose their passport and need to find the nearest Immigration office.“We are taking all of this into account,” Shahrin said during a media conference after MBSA’s full board meeting.
He added that the tourism app is mainly targeted at domestic tourists, especially those outside Selangor.
Apart from listing popular tourist destinations, it will include practical information such as the location of the Immigration Department, the Shah Alam Hospital, and pharmacies.
The app will also include emergency contact numbers.
As of last year, Shah Alam received 1.3 million tourists, an increase of about 74 per cent from 747,576 in 2024.
Shahrin said that MBSA counted only those who stayed overnight in the city as tourists, while those who visited for a day were classified as visitors.
To promote the attraction in the city, it is working with Tourism Selangor and the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry.
Among the attractions he cited include the National Botanic Gardens Shah Alam, Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, and i-City.
Currently, MBSA is planning to engage with two travel agents to promote the current tour packages covering stays of one to three nights.
Shahrin hoped that the packages would get visitors to stay longer, so that spending benefitted hotels, malls, restaurants and other local businesses.
This new development is part of the Shah Alam Tourism Action Plan 2026-2030, which was launched in January this year.
