IPOH, Oct 2 — The Magistrate's Court has ordered a woman charged with murdering her mother to undergo a psychiatric assessment.
Magistrate Norizan Riduan made the order under Section 342(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code to obtain a psychiatric report to determine whether Chew Loong Thye, 49, is fit for trial.
She is alleged to have murdered her mother Ching Lai Khieng, 70, at a house along Laluan Kledang Utara 6, Taman Wang, Menglembu, between 7.15pm and 7.30pm on Sunday (September 27).
The accused nodded in understanding after the charge was read out to her in Cantonese, but no plea was recorded as a murder case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
Earlier, when asked by Norizan whether she was taking any psychiatric medication, Chew replied that she was unsure.
The court then set November 2 for case mention to submit the psychiatric report and related documents.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ainin Sofiya Azlaini conducted the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented.
The media previously reported that an elderly woman was found dead, believed to have been stabbed by her daughter, at the residence.
