Food delivery rider pleads not guilty to careless riding

SHAH ALAM, Oct 1 — A food delivery rider who went viral in a video for knocking down a student at a pedestrian crossing pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court today to a charge of riding without due care and attention.

Muhammad Haziq Izzuddin Ruslan, 25, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Magistrate Muhammad Syafiq Sulaiman.

He was charged with riding a Yamaha motorcycle without due care and attention for other road users, resulting in an accident involving a pedestrian at Persiaran Saujana 4, Sungai Buloh District, at 12.08pm on Monday (September 28).

The charge was framed under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a fine of between RM5,000 and RM10,000 and imprisonment of up to 12 months upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Alia Anisa Khairus Masnan proposed bail of RM5,000 with one surety, while lawyer Muhamad Saifullah Muhamad Azmi appealed for a lower amount, saying his client had no fixed income and supported his unemployed parents.

The court allowed the accused bail of RM2,000 with one surety, with an additional condition that he report to a police station once a month, and fixed November 12 for mention.

A 60-second video that went viral on Monday showed a student being knocked down by a motorcyclist while crossing the road at the pedestrian crossing. The student was seen rolling on the road following the collision, while the motorcyclist also fell.
