GOMBAK, Oct 1 — The rejuvenation of Pekan Lama Rawang will be empowered with an AI-based integrated system to address various problems faced by the public, said Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) Shahman Jalaludin, including traffic congestion.

He added that MPS’ progress of using AI in its control centre is at 60 per cent, and the effort will be completed early next year once the technology is integrated with various systems and data sources.

He explained that the data includes CCTV recordings, integrated smart streetlights, river level readings, GPS information, and readings from other sensors.

“With AI’s help, it provides information that helps us make decisions to solve those problems. When that data is integrated, we can more easily make decisions about issues that occur in (any one) area,” he told Media Selangor.

Shahman also said the data, previously separated, would be gathered under one system to allow AI to pinpoint possible clues for MPS to address problems.

He added that the system is among moves using technology in the Pekan Lama Rawang rejuvenation plan, with a focus on realigning traffic, beautifying older buildings, setting up recreational “pocket parks”, and improving the landscape.

He said MPS is obtaining feedback from residents and traders before appointing consultants to formulate redevelopment plans, including short-, medium- and long-term moves.

Previously, MPS said it expects the rejuvenation of Pekan Lama Rawang to start next year, once studies and designs are done.

According to the proposal, the rejuvenation of the over century-old town aims to empower its heritage identity, improve the quality of public spaces, and boost infrastructure functionality and efficiency.

The Pekan Lama Rawang rejuvenation plan covers efforts to stimulate the local economy, establish pedestrian-friendly practices, and encourage sustainable, quality development.
