KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — The High Court here today fixed October 14 to hear Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s application for a stay of execution of his 15-year jail sentence and RM11.4 billion fine following his conviction in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case.
Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin fixed the date during case management attended by Najib’s counsel, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, and deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Mustaffa P Kunyalam.
“The court fixed October 14 for the hearing since you have filed the certificate of urgency. File the written submissions any time before October 14,” the judge said.
Najib attended today’s proceedings.
On December 26 last year, the High Court sentenced Najib to 15 years in prison and imposed an RM11.4 billion fine in the 1MDB case.
Following that, Najib filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal on December 29 against the decision. However, he did not apply for a stay of execution of the verdict at the time.
For the abuse of power charges, the court imposed a 15-year jail sentence on each count and a collective fine of RM11.4 billion, in default 40 years’ imprisonment.
For the 21 money laundering charges, he was sentenced to five years in prison on each count, with no additional fine.
The 73-year-old will serve an effective custodial term of 15 years after the court ordered all the prison sentences to run concurrently.
The sentence is to run consecutively, beginning only after Najib completes his existing six-year term for the misappropriation of RM42 million in SRC International funds, which concludes on August 23, 2028.
Last Friday, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, granted Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his SRC International sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to the payment of a RM50 million fine.
Meanwhile, at about 9.52 am, Najib’s daughter Nooryana Najwa was seen entering the court complex with her two sons.
Asked when the RM50 million fine would be paid, she replied: “I don’t know.”
