KOTA TINGGI, Sept 22 — A man suspected of killing his five-year-old niece by throwing her into a river in Kampung Padang, Tanjung Sedili, yesterday has been remanded for seven days from today.
The remand order, which runs until Sept 28, was issued by Sessions Court Judge Hafizah Abdul Rajak to facilitate investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
The 37-year-old suspect, who was treated at Kota Tinggi Hospital, was brought to court at about 9 am, wearing a blue T-shirt and escorted by policemen.
The five-year-old girl was found dead in the river yesterday morning.
Yesterday, Kota Tinggi district police chief Supt Yusof Othman said the suspect was believed to have thrown the victim into the river before going on a rampage, armed with a machete, and chasing a 40-year-old man.
He said police received a report on the incident at about 9.30 am and, upon arriving at the scene, a struggle broke out between police and the suspect, resulting in one policeman sustaining injuries.
The suspect was subsequently arrested. According to him, the suspect was believed to have mental health problems.
