SHAH ALAM, Sept 20 — The Sultan Idris Shah Hospital Heart Centre (PJ HSIS) in Serdang performed 69 cardiac intervention cases in a single day on Friday (September 18), including four emergency Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) procedures for heart attack patients.
The centre, which handles about 45 per cent of all cardiac intervention cases recorded across 10 Health Ministry (MOH) cardiac centres, emphasised that its achievement reflected the capacity of its medical team to provide timely treatment for patients.
“The Sultan Idris Shah Hospital Cardiac Centre accounts for nearly half, or 45 per cent, of all cardiac intervention cases recorded across the MOH’s 10 cardiac centres.
“Operations typically begin at 8am and continue until 6pm, with all seven of HSIS’ cardiac catheterisation laboratories (Cath Labs) operating at full capacity to ensure patients receive treatment according to their needs.
“Even after office hours, another four Cath Labs continue operating until late at night to clear the remaining cases awaiting treatment,” the MOH said in a statement yesterday.
It added that the high-intensity operation involved 80 healthcare personnel, comprising 14 cardiologists, six medical officers, 10 radiographers, eight assistant medical officers, as well as 40 nurses and healthcare assistants.
Of the 69 cases handled, 40 were elective cases while 29 were emergency cases including four Primary PCI procedures requiring immediate intervention to save the lives of heart attack patients.
The centre also demonstrated its capability in managing complex coronary cases, with 13 such procedures successfully carried out using intravascular ultrasound technology to support more precise and safer treatment.
Among the advanced procedures performed were four RotaPro Rotational Atherectomy cases and three Intravascular Lithotripsy procedures, which are specialised treatments for patients with heavily calcified coronary arteries that can be difficult to treat using conventional methods.
The MOH added that PJ HSIS’s achievement reflected the commitment, efficiency and teamwork of its cardiology staff in ensuring patients receive high-quality cardiac care that is timely, safe, and effective.
“Every day, PJ HSIS is committed to providing the best possible services to cardiac patients,” it said.
