PETALING JAYA — DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook has offered to resign as Transport Minister following the decision to grant a conditional pardon to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Loke said his resignation would only involve him and would not affect other DAP members in the Cabinet.
“The other Cabinet members representing DAP, including ministers, deputy ministers and those holding other positions, will remain in the unity government,” he said at a press conference after the DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting in the capital today.
He added that he needed some time before submitting his resignation letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as there are several ministerial matters that still required attention.
“I need some time to settle some outstanding matters at the ministry.
“The operations of the Transport Ministry will continue as usual as the plans and projects that have been implemented will continue despite a change in minister.”
Yesterday, Najib was granted a conditional pardon and will serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to him paying a RM50 million fine.
The decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
Loke said that while DAP respected His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia’s prerogative to grant the pardon, the party has a position on the decision.
He said DAP has, from the outset, fought for justice and accountability over the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal and wants those responsible to be given appropriate punishment.
