PUTRAJAYA, Sept 13 — The Election Commission (EC) will conduct a review of electoral constituency boundaries, subject to amendments to the Federal Constitution.
EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said it took note of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s statement on Friday on the proposed amendments to the Federal Constitution to allow for an increase in the number of parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak.
The increase in parliamentary seats will also take into account the electoral constituencies in Peninsular Malaysia, based on the principle that the ratio of representation for Sabah and Sarawak will also be increased from the current level.
“In the context of the delineation of electoral constituencies in the three study units, the EC will conduct a review of the electoral constituency boundaries, subject to amendments to the Federal Constitution,” he said in a statement today.
Ramlan said the EC would provide further clarification once an official decision had been made and there were developments that could be announced to the public.
