MCMC probes Anthropic report on alleged Malaysia election manipulation

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 11 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) takes the latest report by US artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic seriously and is examining the issues raised.

In a statement today, MCMC emphasised that the matters outlined in the report did not fall within its functions or mandate and that it was not involved in any activities or dealings as described in the report.

Media reports said Anthropic identified and removed an account that used its Claude AI platform to operate a commercial election manipulation platform targeting users in Malaysia.

In a report published on Sept 10, the company said it had identified a network comprising about 1,000 fake social media accounts on X, a fake news website and several fabricated dossiers or intelligence files.

MCMC said it is currently seeking further information and clarification from the relevant parties to establish the facts and understand the context of the issues raised.

“Based on the information and evidence obtained, MCMC will determine the appropriate follow-up action within its jurisdiction, including working with the relevant authorities,” the statement said.

MCMC said protecting the public and addressing online harms remain at the core of its responsibilities.

“MCMC will continue to uphold and ensure a safe and trusted online environment for Malaysians,” it added.
