SHAH ALAM, Sept 9 — Factories in Selangor are still allowed to operate without any restrictions amid the current haze situation, said state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim.
He said the state government, together with the Environment Department (DOE) and relevant agencies, would continue to monitor developments before deciding on further action should conditions worsen.
“For now, factory operations remain as usual, with no restrictions. However, we will continue to monitor the situation.
“If the Air Pollutant Index (API) reaches 200 or above, there may be restrictions on certain activities,” he told Media Selangor.
He said further measures to address the haze were still being discussed and would be considered at today’s State Executive Council (MMKN) meeting.
According to Ng, the state government is also prepared to consider an emergency action plan if the situation becomes critical to reduce the impact of the haze on daily activities and the industrial sector.
“We are currently in a monitoring and precautionary mode. We urge all operators, farmers and members of the public not to engage in open burning.
“Factory activities that generate smoke and are not essential should, if possible, be avoided for the time being so as not to worsen the situation,” he said.
Ng also encouraged the public to reduce outdoor activities and prioritise staying indoors throughout the haze period.
“We hope the situation improves quickly so that recreational and daily activities in open areas can resume more freely.
“For now, we need to remain vigilant, prioritise indoor activities, reduce outdoor activities and drink plenty of water.”
On August 26, the state government activated the National Haze Action Plan through the DOE following deteriorating air quality in several areas along Selangor’s west coast.
State executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said schools statewide had been notified of preliminary measures to protect students, particularly in areas recording an API of above 100.
She said schools, kindergartens and childcare centres must be closed if the API reaches 200.
