SHAH ALAM, Sept 8 — Selangor is strengthening urban planning by prioritising pedestrian safety, connectivity and accessibility to create safer and more inclusive public spaces.
State executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han said the matter was among those discussed with PLANMalaysia Selangor on the Guidelines for the Implementation of Pedestrian Friendly Healthy Cities at the Selangor State Town and Country Planning Department yesterday.
He said pedestrian needs must be considered from the planning stage to ensure facilities are better connected, easy to use and do not hinder movement.
“I hope that these guidelines can be translated into tangible changes that can be felt by the people, especially through the provision of connected pedestrian walkways, safer crossings, inclusive access facilities, and more comfortable daily travel,” he said in a Facebook post.
Ng said the connectivity between pedestrian walkways and public transport was also important in creating a more convenient and inclusive mobility system.
He said safety and comfort should form the basis of pedestrian facility planning so that members of the public do not face risks when choosing to walk.
“I believe that when someone chooses to walk, they should not have to risk their safety or comfort,” he said.
