SHAH ALAM, Sept 3 — Maintaining public cleanliness is a shared responsibility and should not be left solely to local authorities or cleaning workers, said Deputy Higher Education Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim.
The Star reported that he said efforts to keep communities clean must begin with individuals taking responsibility for their own surroundings.
“It is not just the responsibility of the local authority or cleaning workers. We all have our respective responsibilities.
“If we cannot maintain cleanliness starting with ourselves, we should not dream of becoming a progressive society,” Adam said during the launch of the “Kajang Bersih, Kajang Di Hatiku” 5.0 campaign at SMK Jalan Bukit.
He added that sustained awareness requires active participation from the community, especially among young people.
Meanwhile, Kajang state assemblyman David Cheong Kian Young said improving the city could begin with small actions, including students taking responsibility for the cleanliness of their classrooms and neighbourhoods.
“When we talk about changing a city, we often imagine major development projects that require millions of ringgit. In reality, change can also begin with very small actions,” he said.
The campaign also encourages students to maintain personal discipline, adopt positive attitudes, and respect others.
“Students are reminded to stay away from drugs and illegal street racing, and to choose their friends wisely,” Cheong said.
The campaign featured plogging, clean-up activities, and tree planting, alongside educational sessions on recycling, dengue prevention, anti-bullying, and drug abuse.
KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd, the Kajang Municipal Council, the police, the Hulu Langat National Anti-Drug Agency, Universiti Selangor, and Universiti Islam Selangor are among the campaign's supporting agencies.
