KANGAR, Aug 25 — Malaysians in Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, as well as those planning to travel there, have been urged to remain vigilant following a series of recent security incidents in the three southern Thai provinces.
Malaysia’s Consul General in Songkhla Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi said those planning to travel to the affected areas were advised to reconsider non-essential travel.
“Malaysians are also advised to avoid areas affected by security incidents, demonstrations or large gatherings and to comply with instructions from the Thai authorities, including those on curfews, road closures and security checks,” he said in a statement from Istana Arau in Perlis today.
The media previously reported that Narathiwat was placed under a curfew from 10.15pm on Saturday (August 22) to 5am on Sunday (August 23), following more than 50 incidents, including bombings and the burning of local government offices and tyres in the three provinces.
Fahmi made the remarks while attending the Kayuhan Malaysia Merdeka 2026 programme around the Ko Taeo subdistrict in Songkhla, led by the Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and the second heir to the Perlis throne Syed Sirajuddin Areeb Putra Al-Haj Jamalullail.
He also urged Malaysians to avoid travelling at night in affected areas, follow official announcements, and keep their immediate family members informed of their travel plans.
Meanwhile, Fahmi advised Malaysians driving into Thailand to carry their original physical driving licence and not rely solely on the digital licence available through the MyJPJ app.
“Important documents, including vehicle registration, insurance, and other required documents, should be carried throughout the journey to facilitate checks by the authorities.
“Malaysians driving or riding in Thailand are also reminded to wear seat belts or helmets at all times and comply with all traffic regulations enforced by the Thai authorities,” he said.
Fahmi added that the Thai authorities are now actively enforcing traffic regulations, including on Malaysian-registered vehicles, with several Malaysian drivers reportedly issued summonses for documentation and traffic-related offences.
