SHAH ALAM, Aug 24 — Selangor’s badminton campaign at SUKMA 2026 ended on a golden note after Muhammad Haziq Mohd Najib was crowned men’s singles champion at the Setia City Convention Centre (SCCC) here today.
Making his SUKMA debut, Muhammad Haziq produced an energetic display to defeat his Negeri Sembilan opponent 21-12, 15-21, 21-15 in a 57-minute three-game battle.
The victory was especially meaningful for the shuttler, whose first and final appearance on the SUKMA stage ended with a gold medal.
Grateful for the triumph, he dedicated the victory to his coach and his club, New Vision Badminton Academy.
“I’m definitely happy with this victory. This is my first and last appearance at SUKMA, and I’ve ended it with a gold medal.
“My coach helped me a lot in this final. I just listened to his advice and gave my best to win,” he told Media Selangor.

Meanwhile, in the women’s singles bronze-medal playoff held concurrently, Selangor’s Eng Ler Qi had to settle for fourth place after losing to her Perak opponent.
A knee injury appeared to hamper Ler Qi’s movement throughout the match.
Selangor also missed out on another medal in the women’s doubles after Sheyeon Wong E-Shwen and Tan Xin Yu lost to the Johor pair in the bronze-medal playoff.
Muhammad Haziq’s triumph ensured Selangor’s badminton contingent ended its SUKMA 2026 campaign with another gold medal, adding to the title won earlier by the women’s team.
